FIRST Tech Challenge UK are a charity providing STEM enrichment programmes to young people in education aged 12-18. The programmes consist of young people working in groups, supported by an industry mentor at their school. They design, build and compete with a robot to take on a global challenge against other teams across the UK.
Manchester based photography agency Decoy Media approached us to create a promotional video for their client First Tech Challenge UK. First Tech Challenge UK, which is a robotics programme aimed at young people aged 12-18, wanted to create a film highlighting that the programme gives crucial skills and experiences to the students outweighing those taught within a typical classroom. With our experience in creating educational video content for Sir John Deane’s Sixth Form College and The Sir John Brunner Foundation we were more than happy to get involved in the project.
Filming was over a two day period shooting video content at two of their regional championship events in London and Birmingham. After production was finalised it was straight into working on the edit in Adobe Premiere Pro to work through the 264GB of raw footage. We worked with Decoy Media to ensure the 4k video footage featured in the edit was on brand and relevant to First Tech Challenge UK’s target audience.
After the success of the first video, in Summer 2023 we were again tasked with creating another film for First Tech Challenge UK this time showcasing the collaborations First Tech has with the STEM industry. We interviewed STEM businesses and First Tech Challenge UK alumni who are involved in the programme and help to bridge the gap between the classroom and the workplace for the students opening the door to future STEM careers. On this occasion we filmed at their championship event for one day in Cambridge in June 2023. The brief was to create a faster paced edit to highlight the energy and excitement of the event.
